The Link Between Nutrition and Mental Health
Very few people care about nutrition. Everyone is looking for cheap food to fill their bellies without thinking too much about what it does to their bodies. Unsurprisingly, scientists have linked food with mood swings and depression.
The way food affects our state of spirit and mind works in several ways. First of all, there is are different types of gut bacteria that feed on different foods. Based on the nutrition of an adult some of these bacteria may strive while others may starve. What has been noticed is that bacteria that feed on starches, carbs, and dairy can lead to mood swings.
At the opposite end of the spectrum, nutrition can be used to improve the state of mind of an individual. Some foods have antidepressant substances while others feed certain types of bacteria that influence serotonin levels. Serotonin controls and guides emotions and because 95% of it is produced in the gastrointestinal tract, nutrition can play an important role in fighting against mental illness.
