Today is May 20, 2021 — National Rescue a Dog Day!

There are few things I love more than rescuing a dog or cat! I love any animal that has four feet and a tail!

I used to be an animal rescuer and I know what a hard job being an animal rescuer is! In honor of National Rescue a Dog Day, I want to share with you a true story. The names of both the canine and the humans have been changed to protect the innocent but the story itself is true.

A few years ago I learned the story of a precious dog whom we shall call “Tramp.” He was a very good mixed breed dog who was homeless. He had lost his original owner through death and he had been placed in a shelter. He missed his original owner terribly and he badly needed and wanted a new owner. He was adopted out a few times but something always happened and he was returned to the shelter. It was never his fault but he was the one who payed the penalty of being rejected and unwanted.

Tramp had just about lost all hope he would ever find his ‘furever’ home when a young family came to the shelter looking for a dog. The family seemed perfect to Tramp. The human mother was a physician and the human daddy was a business man who loved dogs. They had 2 little boys aged 8 and 10 and a little girl aged 6 years old. They looked at Tramp but he was so sure they would reject him he just stayed at the back of his cage. They went on but they came back a few minutes later. This time Tramp tried to please them by wagging his tail but they left again. The third tine they came back to his cage, Tramp really tried to impress them and it worked–they adopted him. They filled out the paperwork and the six of them left the shelter! Tramp had a home at last. He was so happy!

His new home was lovely and it had a large fenced yard! Tramp had finally gotten his “furever” home! All afternoon and evening the new family played with their new dog. Finally at bedtime they introduced Tramp to his new doggie bed and they all went to bed! Everything was peaceful until 3:00 am when Tramp awakened with a start. SOMETHING WAS WRONG! TERRIBLY WRONG!

Tramp jumped out of his bed and started bounding for what he thought was his new parents bedroom! He started barking at the top of his lungs. He pushed the door open and awakened his sleeping parents. At first his new parents were startled and shocked at the actions of their new dog and then they understood. The house was on fire!

In a few seconds Tramp and his parents awakened the sleeping children and all six got out of the burning building safe and sound.

After the firemen put out the fire, the captain told the adults that if the dog had not awakened them, all of them would have burned to death. All of a sudden Tramp started hearing a word he had never heard before. The word was “HERO” and everyone said it when they looked at–him!

Well, needless to say Tramp has a “furever” home! He also has a new name. They call him “Hero.” He is the happiest dog in the state of Oklahoma!

Everyone who has ever had a rescue dog knows a rescue makes the best pet! If you have room in your heart and home for your future best friend, please start thinking of rescuing a dog from a local rescue organizatin or animal shelter!! The life you save just may rescue you as well!!!!
